If you love orchestra ~ a large instrumental ensemble typical of classical music with mixes of instruments from different families, including bowed string instruments such as violin, viola, cello and double bass, as well as brass, woodwinds and percussion instruments, each group in a section, I am sure you have heard about Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) which was founded in year 1998. Since its first inaugural at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas on 17th August 1998, many internationally-acclaimed musicians has worked with MPO, including Lorin Maazel, Sir Neville Marriner, Yehudi Menuhin, Joshua Bell, Harry Connick Jr., José Carreras, Andrea Bocelli and Branford Marsalis. MPO is well known for its fine musical qualities and vitality.
In year 2006, MPO established Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra as part of their commitment to furthering musical interest among the youth.
This very own Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO) celebrates a decade of great music-making, this year. A special concert is scheduled on Friday, 25 August 2017 at 8.30 pm at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP), KLCC. This date marks its 10th anniversary concert debut on that same stage, to be led by the same conductor, Kevin Field.
MPYO presented its inaugural debut at DFP on 25 August 2007 under the direction of Field, its then Principal Conductor, impressing the nation with its brilliant musicianship through engaging works which included Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade. This, after months of intensive training and hard work under the tutelage of the musicians from the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO).
The MPYO then went on to showcase its virtuosity in four cities in Peninsula Malaysia in December that year; Penang, Ipoh, Johor Bahru and Kuantan, before touring Sabah and Sarawak in 2008. The orchestra has also spread its wings to Singapore in 2009 and Brisbane, Australia, in 2012.
With repertoire that ranges from the core symphonic repertoire to specially commissioned works by Malaysian composers, Broadway to film music, jazz and traditional music, the MPYO has grown from leaps and bounds and stood tall as an orchestra full of vibrant enthusiasm and energy.
For its reunion concert with its alumni and Field, the 98-member MPYO will present Vaughan Williams’ Symphony No.2 (nicknamed A London Symphony), Chow’s Getaran, Kodaly’s Danses of Galanta and Saint-Saens’ Bacchanale from ‘Samson and Delilah’, the latter will evoke an element of nostalgia as it is one of the works that was performed in its debut concert a decade ago.
Join the MPYO in this unmissable celebration, only at DFP!
